Summary/Objective: While reporting to the Director, Mandarins, this person will oversee research and development of new and innovative techniques to improve mandarin quality and production, while keeping Senior Management and Ownership informed of mandarin quality and production.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify, develop, and implement new mandarin cultivars suitable to California
  • Research and develop new and innovative plans
  • Research, develop, implement, and manage mandarin fertility plans
  • Research, develop, implement, and manage regulated deficit irrigation regime
  • Attend industry meetings, such as Citrus Research Board, Marketing and logistics meetings, Citrus Nursery Society, and the International Society of Citriculture
  • Periodic reporting to senior management/ownership on Mandarin production
  • Manage the Company’s interest in a Joint Venture of irradiated mandarin cultivars
  • Stay current on international Citrus research
  • Responsible for Canopy Management
  • Responsible for Crop Load Management
  • Responsible for 5-year estimates
  • Responsible for yearly estimates for packing and sales planning
  • Responsible for planning the Harvest
  • Periodic reporting to senior management/ownership on Mandarin production
  • Supervise Department Managers and Field Supervisors, and indirectly supervise 250 employees
  • Local travel to nearby ranches
  • Manage scouts and the information gathered
  • Evaluate spray efficiency
  • 20-40% travel time. All travel time is fully reimburse



  • BS Degree in Biology, Agriculture, Crop Science or related field, MS is preferred. Course work in agronomy, crop genetics, plant pathology, entomology, plant physiology, plant science, soil science, and agriculture communication
  • Experience in Clementine/mandarin hybrid agronomy
  • Understanding of technology and citrus plant phenology to make good irrigation decisions and effective water usage
  • Understanding plant phenology to make good fruit set and fruit quality decisions
  • Experience in crop management, marginal input economics, and cost management
